5 Ways to Elevate a Simple Grilled Cheese

Just in time for National Grilled Cheese Day April 12, we’re celebrating 5 ways to elevate this timeless yummy staple. With simple additions like sourdough bread and fig jam, you’ll have an upscale comfort food in no time.

Two-Cheese Grilled Cheese Sandwich 

What you will need:

2 slices sourdough bread

2 slices American cheese

2 slices mozzarella cheese

3 tbsp butter (1 tbsp for pan 2 tbsp for bread)

1. Butter sourdough bread and pan.

2. Top 2 slices of bread with two slices of American cheese and two slices of mozzarella cheese.

3. Grill sandwich in a buttered pan until golden brown on both sides. 

Pesto Grilled Cheese

What you’ll need:

1-2 tbsp store-bought or homemade pesto (see below) 

2 slices sourdough bread

2 slices provolone cheese

1/2 cup shredded mozzarella

3 tbsp butter (1 tbsp for pan 2 tbsp for bread)

1. Butter 2 slices of sourdough bread and pan.

2. Top two slices of bread with sliced provolone.

3. Top cheeses with pesto.

4. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella on pesto.

5. Grill sandwich in a buttered pan until golden brown on both sides.

Homemade Pesto 

What you will need:

A handful of baby spinach 

~9 leaves fresh basil

3 tbsp parmesan 

1/4 cup pine nuts

1/4 cup olive oil 

1 tsp salt 

1/2 tsp pepper 

1 tsp garlic powder

1. Add all Ingredients to food processor.

2. Grind until smooth.

Bacon & Spinach Grilled Cheese

What you will need:

Bacon, desired amount

Baby spinach, desired amount

2 slices Sara Lee artisan white bread (or other dense white bread) 

2 slices sliced provolone

1/2 cup shredded mozzarella 

Salt and pepper to taste

3 tbsp butter (1 tbsp for pan 2 tbsp for bread)

1. Fry bacon in a pan until crispy.

2. Butter 2 slices of bread with 2 tbsp butter. Add 1 tbsp to the pan.

3. Top two slices of bread with sliced provolone.

4. Add bacon and baby spinach. Add the desired amount of pepper and salt.

5. Sprinkle on mozzarella.

6. Grill sandwich in buttered pan until golden brown.

Pizza Grilled Cheese

What you’ll need:

2 slices Sara Lee artisan white bread (or other dense white bread) 

3 tbsp butter (1 tbsp for pan 2 tbsp for bread)

about 8 slices of pepperoni 

1 tbsp pizza sauce 

1/2 tsp Italian seasoning

1/2 cup shredded mozzarella 

1. Butter bread and pan (don’t skip on buttering the pan. This will make the bread nice and crunchy!)

2. Top two slices of bread with shredded mozzarella.

3. Top cheese with pepperoni. 

4. Spread pizza sauce. 

5. Sprinkle on Italian seasoning.

6. Sprinkle on more shredded mozzarella. 

7. Grill the sandwich in a buttered pan until golden brown on both sides.

Fig Honey Jam and Gouda Grilled Cheese

What you’ll need:

1-2 tbsp store-bought fig honey jam 

3 slices sliced smoked Gouda 

3 tbsp butter (1 tbsp for pan 2 tbsp for bread)

2 slices sliced brioche bread 

1. Butter brioche bread with 2 tbsp butter. Butter pan with 1 tbsp butter.

2. Top two slices of bread with 2 slices of smoked Gouda.

3. Spread fig jam onto both sides.

4. Add one more slice of smoked Gouda.

5. Grill the sandwich in a buttered pan until golden brown.
